More city police cars authorized The Waterloo police department will get at least eight new patrol cars and possibly 10, if the city can find the money, Mayor Leo Rooff said Tuesday. The city council finance committee has authorized the ordering of eight cars from Schukei Chevrolet, which entered a bid of $4,409 per car for a total of $35,274. Mayor Rooff said the other two requested patrol cars will be ordered if it is determined the budget can sustain the expenditure this year. IF THE purchase of all 10 cars is not possible, the re-' maining cars may have to be purchased next year, the mayor said. Schukei Chevrolet was not the low bidder for the police car contract.

Paul Burk Pontiac submitted a bid of $4,277, but that bid was rejected because it included four -barrel carburetors and dual exhausts. SPECIFICATIONS for the cars had called for single barrel carburetors and exhaust systems. Schukei Chevrolet had the second lowest bid of the six firms which submitted offers. See Us For ELECTRICAL HEATING LIGHTING AND SECURITY SYSTEMS BLACK HAWK ELECTRICAL CO. 623 Lafayette Dial 233-3387 New radio system for sheriff approved The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Department has been authorized to order about $56,000 in new communications equipment.

The board of supervisors Tuesday informally approved purchase of new equipment which will be financed through the use of federal revenue sharing funds. The new equipment consists of high band radio units costing $46,280 and automatic recording system which will cost about $10,000. The new system will place Black Hawk County in compliance with the Iowa Telecommunications Plan which regulates radio communication. for all state law enforcement agencies. THE RADIO equipment will include about 25 portable units which can be band held or used as part of patrol car radio equipment.

Waterloo police use similar units. Sheriff Wendell Christensen said the new system will allow the dispatcher to be in constant communication with all deputies even when outside their patrol cars. By going to a higher frequency, the sheriff said, communications would be substantially improved over the currently used low band frequencies which are frequently cluttered with radio traffic. The county will still maintain low band frequencies for area law enforcement agencies which have not yet converted to high-band frequencies. Chief Deputy Wayne Boots, who served as chairman of the county communications committee, said the system is also designed to be economical.

Andrew D. Sergeant, 235 Police seek driver of car that hit pole The driver of a car that smashed into a utility pole in the 1900 block of Black Hawk Road early Tuesday was being sought by Waterloo police. Investigators, said a passenger in the car, Jeffrey D.

Welfer, 20, of 4012 Leversee Cedar Falls, later went to a hospital where he was treated for bumps and scrapes, and released. The driver fled from the scene after the car left the road on a curve and went into a ditch before striking the pole, police said. The accident was reported at 12:28 a.m. Tuesday. Madison said he was picked up at the intersection of Highways 218 and 63 and driven to Hudson where a passenger in the car opened the door and gave him a shove.

Sergeant said he fell onto the roadway, brushed himself off and went to a nearby tavern where he found a friend. The friend then took Sergeant to Schoitz Memorial Hospital in Waterloo where Sergeant was treated for scratches on his arms and side and released. Sergeant could give no further details. The incident was under investigation by Hudson police and Black Hawk County sheriff's deputies. No new radio equipment will be needed at the base station, Boots said. THE CHIEF deputy pointed out the county saved a substantial amount of money by making the units interchangeable between the patrol car and the deputy onfoot.

In addition to the radio equipment, the sheriff's department will order a system which will automatically record all incoming telephone messages. as well as radio communications. The system will also have an instant replay feature which will allow dispatchers to review telephone messages. The recorded material may also be useful as evidence in court proceedings, Boots noted. The board of supervisors are expected to formally act upon the proposal Monday.
