Inside Out 2 is the anticipated sequel to Pixar's heartwarming 2015 Oscar-winning movie, where we'll once again follow Riley and all the emotions that live inside her mind as they react to the world around her.

The first movie is widely regarded as a tearjerker where young Riley and her emotions Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust, and Sadness help her to navigate a move to a new city, house and school, with mixed results. In the sequel, Riley is now a teenager and has brand new emotions to deal with, with the synopsis teasing "she might not be alone" so there's plenty more drama going on inside her mind.

Inside Out 2 release date

Inside Out 2 arrives in exclusively movie theaters worldwide on June 14 and is expected to be one of the bigger summer blockbusters of the year.

Inside Out 2 plot

The sequel "returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley", while headquarters is going through a sudden demolition to make room for new emotions. This proves to be especially challenging when the existing emotions meet Anxiety, an emotion they haven't dealt with before.

Here is the official synopsis for the movie:

"Disney and Pixar's Inside Out 2 returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who've long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren't sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she's not alone."

Inside Out 2 cast

Returning to voice the emotions at the center of Inside Out 2 are Parks & Rec alum Amy Poehler as Joy, The Office's Phyllis Smith as Sadness and comedian Lewis Black as Anger. Also returning are Diane Lane (Feud: Capote vs the Swans) and Kyle MacLachlan (Fallout) as Riley's parents.

There are plenty of new members of the cast, including some replacements. On the emotion side, Tony Hale (Veep) is taking over the role of Fear from Bill Hader, while Liza Lapira (The Equalizer) fills in for Mindy Kaling as Disgust. Riley is also voiced by a new young actress, Kensington Tallman (That Girl Lay Lay).

Then there are entirely new emotions and new actors to portray them, including Maya Hawke (Stranger Things) as Anxiety, Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) as Envy, Adèle Exarchopoulos (Blue is the Warmest Color) as Ennui, Paul Walter Hauser (Black Bird) as Embarrassment and June Squibb (Thelma) as Nostalgia.

Critics are liking the Pixar sequel, as Inside Out 2 is "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 91% as of June 13.

That does trail the original, which earned 98% "Fresh" reviews from the site, but 91% makes Inside Out 2 a very well regarded movie.
